ABOUT BRIDGE 2021

In 2020, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic made people think more about what on earth a “normal” world should be. In 2021, there are only nine years left until 2030, the deadline set by the United Nations to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). What actions should we take to build a bridge to a sustainable future? In response to this question, the BRIDGE (Better Responsibility Initiative - Design for Good Earth) Sustainable Design Action focuses on the SDGs. It brings together design talents from universities and companies around the world to address the SDGs using the design language, attempting to "construct" a bridge to a sustainable future through the lens of design. Concretely, the BRIDGE Action focuses on 5 SDGs. They are “Quality Education”, “Decent Work and Economic Growth”, “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure”, “Sustainable Cities and Communities”, and “Sustainable Consumption and Productions”, which will serve as the main design themes and subjects for discussion. The BRIDGE Action is hosted by Zhejiang University under the Sustainability Action Plan: A Global ZJU for Social Good (Z4G). In March 2021, Zhejiang University has launched Z4G in response to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, aspiring to make a distinctive and positive impact by strengthening its commitment to the SDGs.

ADVISERS

Prof. Shiro AokiShiro Aoki is or was Good Design Award Fellow, COO of Japan-China Exchange Conference in Japan Design Consultant Association (JDCA), COO of Society for Design and Art Fusing with Science and Technology (SDAFST), Honorary member of Japanese Society for the Science of Design (JSSD).

Prof. Makoto WatanabeMakoto Watanabe is a Professor at the Department of Design, Division of Creative Engineering Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Chiba University. He is currently the Vice President of Chiba University, in charge of education and international affairs. His major interests include Industrial Design, Design Management and Design Expert System.

Prof. Byung-keun OhByung-keun OH is a Professor of Division of Design & Art in Yonsei University of Korea, and Vice President of Korea Society of Design Science. His general interests include information and media design, methodology of user research, design education, public service design, and design aesthetics.

Prof. Mohan Rajesh ElaraMohan Rajesh Elara is an Assistant Professor with the Engineering Product Development Pillar at SUTD. He is the co-founder of Lionsbot and Oceania Robotics, Singapore-based robotics companies that develop a wide range of autonomous robots for specialized niche industries.

Prof. YING FangtianYING Fangtian is a Professor at Zhejiang University. He is the Director of Computer Aided Product Innovation Design Engineering Center, Ministry of Education, Vice Director of Zhejiang Provincial Key Lab of Service Robot, Vice Dean of International Design Institute of ZJU, and Vice President and Secretary General of China Industrial Design Association.

Prof. SUN LingyunSUN Lingyun is a Professor at Zhejiang University. He is the Deputy Director of the International Design Institute of Zhejiang University, Ng Teng Fong Chair Professor and the director of ZJU-SUTD Innovation, Design and Entrepreneurship Alliance. His research interests include Design Intelligence, Innovation and Design, Information and Interaction Design.

Prof. Byoungkwan OHByoungkwan OH is a Research Professor in Division of Design & Art of Yonsei University. His research interests are information design in digital healthcare, video content design, motion graphic design, character design and storytelling.

Prof. HUANG JinghuaHuang Jinghua is an Associate Professor and master supervisor at International Design Institute, Zhejiang University. Her research interests include ergonomics, biological rhythm, cognitive science, emotional design and service design.

Prof. Ikjoon CHANGIkjoon CHANG is an Associate Professor of Design Research Institute, Chiba University, Japan. His majors are branding, editorial, illustration and information design based on graphic design.

Prof. Maria Rita FerraraMaria Rita Ferrara is an Associate Professor of Industrial Design at the Department of Design, Politecnico di Milano. She is the head of the Material Design Culture Research Centre. Her present research focuses on the emerging materials, smart materials and bio-smart materials through a design approach.

Prof. Preben HansenPreben Hansen is a Docent and Associate Professor in Human-Computer Interaction and information searching at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences, Stockholm University, and an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His research interests include interaction design, autonomous driving, sustainable design, Human-Built Environment Interaction and regenerative design.

Prof. YAO LiningYAO Lining is an Assistant Professor of Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) at Carnegie Mellon University, School of Computer Science, directing the Morphing Matter Lab.

Prof. XUE HaianXUE Haian is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, Delft University of Technology. He is currently on the ‘Design for Mood Regulation’ project to develop a theory that details the mechanisms that underlie mood experiences in human-design interaction and explains how design-supported mood regulation can foster human well-being.

Prof. Immanuel KohImmanuel Koh holds a joint appointment as an assistant professor in Architecture & Sustainable Design and Design & Artificial Intelligence at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, where he now directs Artificial-Architecture. He obtained his PhD from the School of Computer Sciences and the Institute of Architecture at EPFL.

Prof. Carlos BañónCarlos Bañón is an architect specialized in Digital Design and Advanced Manufacturing methods within the built environment, Director of AirLab, co-founder of Subarquitectura Architects and Assistant Professor of Architecture and Sustainable Design at SUTD. His work has been awarded the Singapore President's Design Award and selected for the Venice Biennale of Architecture, the London Design Museum, and the Seoul Biennale of Architecture.

Prof. Benny Ding LeongBenny Ding Leong is an Assistant Professor at the School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). He is the founder of the Asian Lifestyle Design Research Network (LSDER-China), the co-founder of DESIS-China and members of LeNS-China. His research areas include Design for Sustainability & Social Well-being, Lifestyle Design Research, and Integrative Design Thinking.

Prof. Elizabeth Yerin SHIMElizabeth Yerin SHIM is an Assistant Professor of Visual Communication Design at Yonsei University. She received her Ph.D. in Communication Design from Seoul National University. Her work experiences include Design Director at Logo of Viacom Networks in NYC. She has won over 20 international Design Awards.

Prof. Juan Carlos Chacon QuinteroJuan Carlos Chacon Quintero is an Assistant Professor at System Planning lab at Design Department, Chiba University. He is currently working on Machine Learning, Interaction and Data Visualization projects.

Dr. Hisa Martinez NimiDr. Hisa Martinez Nimi is a Design Researcher at Design Research Institute of Chiba University. She is currently working with Graphic Design and Machine Learning educational projects.

Prof. LI XiangdongLI Xiangdong is an Associate Professor at College of Computer Science and Technology, Zhejiang University. His research interests mainly include intelligent human-computer interface, cross-device computing, and creative media design.

Prof. ZHANG KejunZHANG Kejun is an Associate Professor and Ph.D. supervisor at College of Computer Science and Technology, Zhejiang University. His research interests mainly include Artificial Intelligence, Affective computing, Design Science, Robots, Data Mining, Design Calculation, and Design Cognition.

Prof. CHEN ShiCHEN Shi is currently an Associate Professor in Industrial Design Department, Zhejiang University. Her research interests lie in Information and Interaction Design, Visual Design Computing, and Design cognition.

Prof. XU WenjieXU Wenjie is an Associate Professor in Industrial Design Department, Zhejiang University. Her research interests include Intelligent Product Design, Intelligent Home, and Intelligent Healthy Life.

Dr. JIANG HaoDr. JIANG Hao is a lecturer in International Design Institute of Zhejiang University. His research interests mainly include Design Cognition, Product Design and Evaluation, Product Design on the Disabled and Old Man.

XU TuSenior UX Design Expert form Alibaba, Ph.D in UX design, Head of Alibaba Auction product design, specializes in game theory, business model exploration and interdisciplinary research. He is also responsible for academic activities between universities and Alibaba Design Committee.

Qun JianHead of Merchant Product Design of Alibaba Taobao Design Department, with 7-year experience in Taobao client product design, specializes in product design language, construction of design systems.

ZHENG Mingfeng (Xi Lu)Senior UX Design Expert form Alibaba, with ten-year experience in internet product design. Currently working on digitalisation of travel industry, mainly focus on redesign of travel experience in terms of when and where.

PENG Zhaohui (Sang Xing)Head of Merchant Ecology and Public Welfare Design of Alipay Design Business Unit, with 14-year experience of commercial design, public welfare design and product design.

GU Wei (Bu Yan)Senior UX Design Expert form Alibaba, with 11-year experience. Worked at 1688, Tmall, Alipay in brand, industrial and space design, and he was chief brand designer of “Taobao Double 11”. He is good at discovering design opportunities across domains.

MAO BingnanStaff UX Designer at Alipay, focusing on the service design of Alipay’s life service industry and education industry. In addition, he is integral in driving better product experience of Alipay’s ecological services.

CHANG Xin (Qing Xin)Head of Fortune Design Team of Alipay Design, promoting the application and development of inclusive design and barrier-free design in Alibaba. He is also the initiator and social innovation practitioner of Ant Forest, Ant Farm, and Ant Love Design Platform, solving social problems through design, emphasizing the sustainability and democracy of design.

LIU XiaoSenior UX design expert from Alibaba Design, Head of buyer product and marketing design team in Alibaba.com. 10+ years design experience of exploring ventures that shipped products across both B2B and B2C space.

Neil DUANDirector of Alibaba Design Business Unit, Head of Design @AliExpress, with a demonstrated history of working in the technology industry in China and US, covering both enterprise and consumer facing products for global markets, specialized in data driven design, User Experience Design, etc.
